Hand Spinning Workshop
I regularly run workshops to help introduce students to the huge subject that is ‘hand spinning wool into yarn’.
As most people don’t just happen to have a spinning wheel going spare, it’s a great way to come and have a go and to get a feel of what it’s like to use these wonderful traditional tools.
We talk about fleece preparation, how to choose a good fleece and ways to wash it. We use carders to comb wool and students get a choice of 3 different type of wheel to try their hand at spinning.
I encourage the use of various different tools that a hand spinner would have in her kit and demonstrate how yarn is plied into a stable yarn ready for knitting, crochet or to weave with.
A full day which includes a 2 course lunch and yarn to take home with you too.
This particular day was held at ‘Humble by Nature’ in Monmouthshire. A lovely farm set high on a hill, farmed by Farmer Tim and his wife Sarah and owned by Kate Humble. Many different types of workshops are held here, from learning to keep sheep, laying a hedge, lambing, bread making, plant dyeing, willow weaving, bee keeping and much much more. Their website is well worth a look.
